Automotive Frequently Asked Questions
Maintenance & Proactive Care
-
How often should I have my vehicle serviced?
Every vehicle is different, so there isn't one maintenance schedule that applies to every make and model. Manufacturer recommendations, vehicle age, mileage, and driving conditions all play a role. At Grooms Motors & Automotive, we generally recommend having your vehicle serviced approximately every 5,000 miles when using full-synthetic oil, which is what we use. These regular visits also give us an opportunity to inspect your vehicle, monitor wear, review upcoming manufacturer-recommended maintenance, and identify potential concerns before they become larger problems. Our goal isn't simply to change your oil, it's to help you stay educated, safe, and proactive about the care of your vehicle.
-
Why is preventive maintenance important?
Preventive maintenance helps identify wear and potential problems before they lead to unexpected breakdowns, costly repairs, or safety concerns. Regularly maintaining your vehicle can also help extend its life, improve reliability, and protect your investment. At Grooms Motors & Automotive, we believe the best repair is often the one you can prevent. By monitoring your vehicle over time and following a proactive maintenance plan, we help you make informed decisions about what your vehicle needs now, what can wait, and what to plan for in the future. Our goal is simple: fewer surprises, safer travels, and more control over your vehicle's care.
-
How do I know what maintenance my vehicle needs?
Every vehicle is different, and its maintenance needs depend on the manufacturer’s recommendations, mileage, age, driving conditions, and service history. At Grooms Motors & Automotive, we take the guesswork out of vehicle maintenance. During service, we perform a Digital Vehicle Inspection (DVI) to evaluate key components and document the current condition of your vehicle. We combine those findings with your vehicle’s mileage and maintenance history to help determine what needs attention now, what can wait, and what you should plan for in the future. Our goal is to educate you, not pressure you, so you can make informed decisions about your vehicle’s safety, reliability, and long-term care.
-
Do I need an oil change if I don't drive very many miles?
Yes. Vehicle maintenance isn't based on mileage alone, time matters too. When your vehicle sits, its fluids sit too. Oil can degrade over time, moisture and contaminants can accumulate, and other fluids and components can be affected even when the vehicle isn't driven often. That's why low-mileage vehicles still need regular inspections and time-based maintenance. At Grooms Motors & Automotive, we consider your vehicle's mileage, age, driving habits, manufacturer recommendations, and service history to help determine the right maintenance schedule for you. Low mileage doesn't always mean low maintenance. Proactive care helps keep your vehicle ready when you are.
-
What fluids should be regularly checked or replaced in my vehicle?
Your vehicle relies on several important fluids to operate safely, efficiently, and reliably. These can include engine oil, transmission fluid, coolant, brake fluid, power steering fluid, differential fluid, and transfer case fluid, depending on your vehicle. Each fluid serves a different purpose and has its own maintenance requirements based on the vehicle’s make, model, mileage, age, and driving conditions. At Grooms Motors & Automotive, we inspect applicable fluids during our Digital Vehicle Inspection (DVI) and use your vehicle’s condition, service history, and manufacturer recommendations to help determine when maintenance is needed. Fluids are the lifeblood of your vehicle. Proactively maintaining them can help protect major components, improve reliability, and prevent costly repairs.
-
Can regular maintenance really help prevent breakdowns?
Yes. While not every breakdown can be predicted or prevented, regular maintenance can help identify wear, leaks, failing components, and other concerns before they leave you stranded. At Grooms Motors & Automotive, our proactive approach includes a Digital Vehicle Inspection (DVI) to help monitor your vehicle’s condition over time. This allows us to identify potential concerns early, explain what we find, and help you plan for repairs or maintenance before a small issue becomes a bigger problem. Our goal is to see your vehicle in the shop on your schedule, not on the back of a tow truck.
Repairs & Diagnostics
-
What is a Digital Vehicle Inspection (DVI)?
A Digital Vehicle Inspection (DVI) is a comprehensive inspection that gives you a clear picture of your vehicle’s current condition. Our technicians inspect key components and systems and document their findings digitally, often including photos, videos, notes, and recommendations that you can review from your phone or computer. At Grooms Motors & Automotive, a DVI allows us to identify safety concerns, monitor wear, and help you understand what may need attention now, what can wait, and what you should plan for in the future. Most importantly, a DVI helps you see what we see. It gives you the information you need to make educated decisions about your vehicle, without the guesswork. It’s not just an inspection; it’s a tool to help you stay informed, safe, and proactive.
-
What is a GMA Health Evaluation Report (DVI)?
At Grooms Motors & Automotive, what is commonly referred to in the automotive industry as a Digital Vehicle Inspection (DVI) is something we call your GMA Health Evaluation Report. Why? Because we believe it is more than an inspection, it's a way for you to understand the overall health and condition of your vehicle. Our technicians evaluate key vehicle systems and components and digitally document their findings, including photos, videos, notes, measurements, and recommendations when applicable. Your GMA Health Evaluation Report helps you see what we see and understand what may need attention now, what can wait, and what you should plan for in the future. We use this information to help monitor your vehicle over time, identify developing concerns, and give you the information you need to make educated decisions about its care. Think of it as a health report for your vehicle, designed to help you stay informed, safe, and proactive.

Why do I have to pay for automotive diagnostics?
Modern vehicles contain numerous computer-controlled systems capable of storing many different Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). Some modern vehicles can have tens of thousands of possible diagnostic trouble codes across their many electronic systems and control modules. But a trouble code is not a diagnosis, it is a starting point. Think of a code like a ZIP code. It gets us into the right neighborhood, but it doesn't tell us which house has the problem. A single code can have several possible causes, and one vehicle problem may even result in multiple codes. It's similar to visiting a doctor. You may arrive with a symptom, but the symptom alone doesn't tell the doctor exactly what is wrong. The doctor uses education, experience, testing, and specialized equipment to determine the underlying cause. Professional automotive diagnostics works much the same way. For years, free code scans helped create the misconception that retrieving a code and diagnosing a vehicle are the same thing. They aren't. At Grooms Motors & Automotive, you're not paying us simply to retrieve a code. You're paying for the technician's time, training, technology, testing, and expertise required to determine the root cause of the problem and recommend the correct repair. A code tells us where to start. Diagnostics tells us why.
-
What is the difference between a diagnostic test and simply reading a check-engine-light code?
Reading a check-engine-light code is just the first step. A scan tool communicates with your vehicle’s computer systems and retrieves Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). These codes provide clues about where a problem has been detected, but they do not tell us exactly what has failed or what needs to be replaced. Think of a code like a ZIP code, it gets us to the neighborhood, but not the exact house. Professional diagnostics goes much further. A trained automotive technician uses the code as a starting point and then performs additional testing, analyzes live vehicle data, reviews technical information, and uses specialized equipment and experience to determine the root cause of the problem. It’s similar to visiting a doctor with a symptom. The symptom helps the doctor know where to begin, but testing and professional expertise are needed to determine the actual diagnosis. Reading a code tells us where to start. Professional diagnostics helps us determine why the problem is happening, so we can recommend the right repair the first time.
-
Can you diagnose electrical and computer problems?
Yes. Today’s vehicles are much more than mechanical machines—they are sophisticated networks of computers, sensors, modules, wiring, and electronic systems that all communicate with one another. At Grooms Motors & Automotive, our trained technicians use advanced diagnostic equipment, technical information, testing procedures, and their expertise to diagnose electrical and computer-related concerns. These may include warning lights, starting and charging issues, battery drains, sensor and module communication problems, wiring concerns, and other electronic system faults. Because an electrical or computer-related symptom can have several possible causes, we focus on testing and identifying the root cause rather than guessing and replacing parts unnecessarily. Modern vehicles require modern diagnostics—and technicians who know how to interpret what the vehicle is telling them.
-
Should I continue driving if my check engine light comes on?
Maybe, but it depends on what is causing the light to come on. A check-engine light can indicate many different concerns, ranging from relatively minor issues to problems that could lead to additional damage or leave you stranded. Because there are so many possible causes, we cannot accurately diagnose your vehicle over the phone or determine whether it is safe to continue driving until we can properly inspect and test it. If the check-engine light is flashing, or the vehicle is running poorly, losing power, overheating, making unusual noises, or showing other warning signs, we recommend stopping in a safe location and contacting us for guidance before continuing to drive. If the light is steady and the vehicle appears to be operating normally, contact Grooms Motors & Automotive so we can evaluate the vehicle and determine the cause as soon as practical. A warning light is your vehicle’s way of telling you something needs attention. Our job is to determine what it’s trying to tell you.
Dealerships, Warranties & Parts
-
Do I have to take my vehicle to the dealership for maintenance to keep my warranty?
Generally, no. Federal law protects your right to have routine maintenance and non-warranty repairs performed by a qualified independent repair facility without automatically voiding your manufacturer’s warranty. You are still responsible for following your vehicle manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule and keeping documentation showing that the required services were performed. There are some exceptions. Dealer maintenance plans, complimentary services, and separately purchased service contracts, sometimes called “extended warranties”, may have their own terms and requirements. Warranty-covered repairs may also need to be performed at an authorized facility. At Grooms Motors & Automotive, we encourage you to understand the coverage you purchased. If you're unsure, bring us your warranty or service-contract information and we'll help you understand what maintenance your vehicle requires and what services we can perform. You have choices when it comes to maintaining your vehicle, and we believe you should understand them.
-
What type of parts and fluids does Grooms Motors use?
At Grooms Motors & Automotive, we believe the quality of the products going into your vehicle matters just as much as the quality of the technician working on it. We use premium products, including AMSOIL synthetic lubricants, BG products and fluids, NAPA Gold filters, and new OEM or premium quality replacement parts, depending on the vehicle and application. Not every vehicle requires the same fluid, specification, or part. We select products based on your vehicle manufacturer's requirements, proper fit and application, performance, and long-term reliability, not simply on finding the least expensive option. Our goal is to use products we trust and would feel confident putting in our own vehicles, because quality parts and fluids are an important part of proactive vehicle care. Better products. Proper application. Protection you can trust.
-
Does Grooms Motors offer a warranty on repairs?
Yes. At Grooms Motors & Automotive, we stand behind the quality of our work. Qualifying repairs are backed by a 3-year/36,000-mile nationwide warranty, giving you added peace of mind whether you're close to home or traveling. We also offer qualifying BG maintenance services, which may be eligible for the BG Lifetime Protection® Plan. When eligible BG services are performed according to the program requirements and maintained at the required intervals, the plan can provide additional protection for certain major vehicle systems and components. Coverage, eligibility, limitations, and maintenance requirements vary, so our team is happy to explain which protections apply to your vehicle and services. Quality service shouldn't end when you leave our shop—we want you to feel confident in your vehicle long after your visit.
-
What's the difference between a dealership and an independent automotive repair shop?
Both dealerships and independent automotive repair shops can play an important role in caring for your vehicle, but there are some key differences. Dealerships typically specialize in the vehicle brands they sell and are often the appropriate choice for manufacturer warranty repairs, recalls, and certain manufacturer-specific services. An independent automotive repair shop like Grooms Motors & Automotive can service and repair multiple makes and models, giving you more flexibility in where you choose to maintain your vehicle. We have access to professional diagnostic equipment, technical information, quality parts and fluids, and highly trained technicians needed to properly service today's complex vehicles. One of the biggest differences is the relationship. As a locally owned independent shop, we get to know you, your vehicle, its history, and your long-term goals. We can help you prioritize what needs attention now, what can wait, and what to plan for in the future. At Grooms Motors, our focus is not simply repairing what's broken. It's providing education, safety, and proactive care, so you can make informed decisions and keep your vehicle reliable, on your terms. The right repair facility isn't just about where you take your vehicle. It's about who you trust to help you care for it.
European & Other Vehicles
-
Does Grooms Motors service BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, and Audi vehicles?
Yes. Grooms Motors & Automotive services a wide range of European, Asian, and domestic vehicles, including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volkswagen, Lexus, Toyota, INFINITI, and many others. Today’s vehicles require specialized knowledge, advanced diagnostic equipment, technical information, and technicians who understand increasingly complex mechanical, electrical, and computer-controlled systems. -
Do European vehicles require special maintenance or equipment?
Yes, many European vehicles have specific maintenance and service requirements. Manufacturers such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and Volkswagen may require particular fluid specifications, specialized diagnostic equipment, vehicle-specific service procedures, tools, and technical information. Using the correct products and procedures matters. Something as seemingly simple as using the wrong oil or fluid specification can affect vehicle performance and potentially contribute to premature wear or other problems. At Grooms Motors & Automotive, we invest in specialized equipment, advanced diagnostic technology, quality parts and fluids, and ongoing technician training to properly service today's European vehicles. We also consider the manufacturer's recommendations, your vehicle's age, mileage, condition, and service history when developing a maintenance plan. European vehicles are engineered with specific requirements. Our job is to understand those requirements and service them properly.
-
Can Grooms Motors perform factory-scheduled maintenance?
Yes. Grooms Motors & Automotive can perform factory-scheduled maintenance for the makes and models we service. We use your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations along with its age, mileage, service history, current condition, and driving habits to determine what maintenance is due. Depending on the vehicle, scheduled maintenance may include oil and filter service, fluid services, filters, inspections, and other manufacturer-recommended items. Our goal is not simply to follow a checklist. We help you understand what your vehicle needs, why it needs it, and what you can plan for in the future so you can make informed decisions about your vehicle’s care. You don't necessarily have to return to the dealership for routine factory-scheduled maintenance. We can help you proactively maintain your vehicle while keeping detailed records of the services we perform. Factory-scheduled maintenance. Personalized care. On your terms.
Tires & Safety
-
How do I know when my tires need to be replaced?
Tires should be replaced based on more than just mileage. Tread depth, tire age, uneven wear, cracking, bulges, punctures, vibration, and overall condition can all help determine whether a tire is still safe to use. While the legal minimum tread depth is generally 2/32 of an inch, waiting until your tires reach the minimum isn't always the best choice, especially when wet-weather traction is important. Here in Florida, heavy rain and standing water can make adequate tread depth especially important. At Grooms Motors & Automotive, we inspect your tires as part of our Digital Vehicle Inspection (DVI) and look for tread wear, tire condition, age, inflation concerns, and abnormal wear patterns that could indicate an alignment, suspension, or other issue. Rather than relying on mileage alone, we'll show you what we see and help you determine when replacement makes sense for your vehicle and driving needs. Your tires are the only part of your vehicle touching the road, keeping them in good condition is an important part of keeping you safe.
-
Is it better to patch or plug a damaged tire?
At Grooms Motors & Automotive, we do not plug tires. We only perform approved internal tire repairs when the tire and location of the damage are considered safe and repairable. A plug inserted from the outside may temporarily stop an air leak, but it does not allow the technician to properly inspect the inside of the tire for hidden damage. An external plug alone may also fail to properly seal the tire's inner liner. For a proper repair, the tire should be removed from the wheel and inspected internally. If the puncture is within a repairable area and meets applicable safety guidelines, we can perform an internal repair that seals the injury appropriately. Damage to areas such as the sidewall or shoulder generally should not be repaired, and some punctures may require tire replacement. Our priority isn't simply stopping an air leak, it's determining whether the tire can be safely returned to service. When it comes to tires, a quick fix isn't always a safe fix.
